Men's, women's Cross Country both take second in SLC tourney

SFA Cross Country, both the Lumberjack and Ladyjacks, scored 2nd in the Southland Conference Championships on Monday at the Piney Woods Country Club.

This is the seventh time in eight years for the men's team to finish in the top two; the women have been in the top three in each of the last seven season.

"The meet overall had a lot of positives," head coach Lou Snelling said.

Keith Mahipala, Plano, junior, made 13th place overall with a time of 26:00. Redshirt Mitch Ownbey, Yukon, Okla., freshmen, took eighth and was named the SLC Freshman of the Year.

Stephanie Ganter, McKinney freshman, and Brette Fleming-Wood, Mansfield freshman, made all conference. Gunter also made 3rd overall all conference top 10 and was named SLC Freshmen of the Year.

Amy Shackelford, Port Neches sophomore, finished 12th with a time of 22:48.

Meredith Blocker, Mineola sophomore, and Megan Jenkins, Houston sophomore, made inside the top 20, finishing at 17th and 20th. Heather Adams, River Oaks junior, took 37th with a time of 24:12 and Marie Flores, Alvin sophomore, at 23:42.

Dennis Yeats, Terrel, sophomore earned All-SLC honors by finishing seventh having a time of 25:31 on a 8,000 meters course.

Both teams are getting ready for NCAA South Central Regional Championships Nov.15th in Waco.
