A grant from the Texas Traffic Safety Program will help Driving Jacks with expenses by reimbursing them for 50 percent of certain costs, including those for office supplies, car rentals and gasoline.

The group applied for the grant from the Texas Department of Transportation in March and it went into effect Oct. 1.

"Whenever I got the e-mail that we were going to be awarded the grant, I was ecstatic, knowing that the grant would help out our organization tremendously," Hector Pineda, president of Driving Jacks and Conroe junior, said.

After each month, the Driving Jacks president scans in receipts from car rentals, gas and office supplies into e-grants, a state web site, and gives them a brief description for that period like a progress report. Once the state gets those receipts, Driving Jacks gets back 50 percent back of what they spent.

"It's nice to have a big thing supporting us," Laura Squiers, director of community relations and Ventura, Calif., sophomore, said.

Driving Jacks provides an average of 110 rides per weekend to students. For a free ride call (936) 652-6600.
