ODK preliminary members launches recycling program

Members of the Omicron Delta Kappa leadership honorary's spring preliminary class are in the process of establishing a recycling project on campus.

The project is called The Kermit Project, and it is named after Kermit the Frog and one of his favorite phrases, "It's not easy being green."

Holley Gaskill, Austin junior, is a member of ODK who is setting up the project. "We figured Kermit would be a good icon to associate environmental friendliness with," Gaskill said.

The kick-off for the project began Wednesday and continues through today from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. by Surfin' Steve. There will be a table set up with members of ODK present to inform students about the project.

The recycling bins will be on display at the table in order to help students become familiar with the process. Students can start dropping off cans and recyclables at the kick-off, and bins will also be placed in the library and the recreation center on Thursday.

"We are starting off in these central locations, but we would love this to be the start of something new," Gaskill said.

ODK members have been working on this project since the beginning of the semester and have coordinated with other organizations to get the project on its feet. Members were responsible for finding out where bins could be placed around campus and who would be collecting the cans from the bins. Tipton Ford donated the recycling bins, and the trash will be picked up by the city, but the members will still be responsible for replacing the bins.

Although the members establishing The Kermit Project are the preliminary class, all members of ODK are promoting the project. "It would be great if other organizations on campus would be able to help out with collections," Gaskill said.

Service hours will also be available for those volunteering to help out with the project.
