For students who wish to play Santa this year, the opportunity is heading their way. The Office of Student Life and the Empty Stocking Fund have come together to bring an Empty Stocking Tree to Student Center.
The Empty Stocking Fund helps provide Christmas presents to needy children all over Nacogdoches.
The tree is currently in the PSC and will be displayed throughout finals week. Cookies will also be served during this event. Everyone is encouraged to look over the tree tags, choose a gift and buy it.
Once students find a gift that they wish to provide for the person whose tag they selected, they can take it to the Information Desk. The presents can be returned wrapped or unwrapped to the Involvement Center in the BPSC.
The Empty Stocking Fund focuses on providing gifts for kids from 12 to 17. All presents are supposed to be less than $100.
Michael Preston, director of student life, said SFA has a long history of giving back at Christmas time.
"SFA students and staff really give during the holidays," he said. "Last year we collected over 100 toys in our Toys for Tots Drive and made 94 shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child."
Jeanne Lapotaire, SFA volunteer coordinator, said, "Students don't have a lot of extra money, but pooling your extra cash and buying a gift as a group of friends or student organization is a great way to get involved."
