Community attends Kite Fest, raises funds for The Helping House
The 11th annual Kite Fest took place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, April 3, at the A.L. Mangham JR Regional Airport. The event raised money for The Helping House, a private school and resource center aimed for helping East Texas children on the autism-spectrum.

The Helping House, located on 401 Houston St., has served the East Texas community for 14 years. The Kite Fest helps offset operation costs so services may be more affordable for families.

Admission for the Kite Fest was free, and attendees could either bring their own kites or purchase one. The 5-hour event also featured vendors, games, bounce houses, a rock wall, face painting and carnival food.

Opened in 2008 by Amanda and Josie Johnson, The Helping House has served over 150 children and their families and features different programs to offer flexibility.

Hundreds of Nacogdoches residents and visitors came out Sunday afternoon to fly kites, have picnics, play in inflatable bounce houses and table at the event.

Families flew kites of all shapes and sizes. Due to the location of this year's event, Kite Fest organizers with the Helping House were required to follow FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) guidelines.
