The Lumberjacks traveled south to Houston last weekend to compete in the 93rd annual Battle of the Piney Woods and lost 54-21 to the Sam Houston State University Bearkats. A sea of purple and orange could be seen at the NRG Stadium on Saturday.

Despite the Lumberjack loss, the tradition holds history with both universities:

-The Battle of the Piney Woods is one of the oldest NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) rivalries in Texas. The series began in 1923.

-The only NCAA Division I active rivalries in Texas  older than the Battle of the Piney Woods are Texas-Texas A&M (116 games,) Baylor-Texas A&M (108,) Baylor-Texas (107) and SMU-TCU (98).

-The first game played in Houston was in 1976. Every battle before then was located in Nacogdoches or Huntsville.

-Since 2010, the game has been played consecutively in Houston at the NRG Stadium.
