Students gathered in the Axe Handle Cafe to watch the Lumberjacks play in the NIT Tuesday night.
The Student Affairs Association, Student Government Association, Student Services and the Traditions Council hosted and sponsored a viewing party of SFA’s NIT basketball game Tuesday night in the Axe Handle Café.
With the kick-off at 10 p.m. and free chili dogs, soda and chips sponsored by Classic Fare Catering, Lumberjack fans had the opportunity to watch the invitation-only game on the big screen.
Because this is the first time for the basketball team to be invited to the NIT (National Invitation Tournament,) students at the viewing agreed that it was important to be supportive.
“It’s important to support the Lumberjacks even when we’re not there,” Megan Mortensen, senior hospitality administration student, said.
Because half of the students on campus are underage, this viewing allowed those fans who wanted to watch the game do it without going to a bar.
“It’s a nice alternative, because it’s nice for people who can’t go into bars,” Amy Wright, senior child and family development major, said.
Also at the viewing was freshman red-shirt basketball player Patrick Costello, despite the fact that he only plays in practices.
Costello, who has been playing all his life, likes the fact that there were so many fans at the viewing.
“I wish I was there,” Costello said. “It feels good to see everyone here. It validates the effort you put in.”
Despite the large crowd and support of the Lumberjack fans, SFA lost 58 to 57 to Stanford.
