Both the Lumberjacks and Ladyjacks are setting their focus to play against the Central Arkansas Bears and Lamar Cardinals, as the Ladyjacks look to get on top of the conference and the Lumberjacks attempt to gain momentum heading into the conference tournament.
The Ladyjacks will play the Central Arkansas Sugar Bears on Wednesday. The Ladyjacks beat the Sugar Bears 59-53 on the road last time they faced each other.
Another big performance by Ladyjacks Chanell Hayes and Imani Johnson, plus a strong paint defense can propel the team past the Bears. The Ladyjacks struggled with 3-point shooting last time against the Bears, only shooting 1-for-10. The Jacks have gone on a cold streak shooting since the last time they met, going 54-for138 against several different opponents. This game is sure to be physical with multiple free throws and multiple drives to the lane.
The Ladyjacks will play against the Bears at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at William R. Johnson Coliseum.
The Ladyjacks are below Lamar, sitting in the second seed, while Lamar commands a half-game lead for the No. 1 seed in the conference. It’s a battle for the top seed, because if the Ladyjacks win, they would reclaim the top spot. If the Cardinals win, they would pull their records farther apart, and with only two games left, it will be a door-die situation as both teams hope to clinch the first seed heading into the conference tournament.
SFA will take on Lamar at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Montagne Center in Beaumont.
The Lumberjacks sit four spots in front the Bears in the Southland Conference. At 7-7, the Lumberjacks are coming off a win against Incarnate Word, but they struggled in the two previous games, with a two-game losing streak at the hands of Northwestern State and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. SFA will look to come out of Arkansas with a win, despite being 3-6 on the road.
The last time the Lumberjacks were on the road, they were defeated as the NSU Demons made a second-half comeback to beat the Jacks 87-72. In the game, Shannon Bogues did all the heavy lifting by scoring 29 points and adding four rebounds and three assists to his totals. Kevon Harris, put up 18 points.
The Jacks will take on the Bears at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Conway, Arkansas.
After playing UCA, the Lumberjacks will face the seed above them in the SLC when they match up against the Lamar Cardinals on Saturday at the Montagne Center in Beaumont.
With a win against UCA and LU, the Jacks would potentially move up above Lamar and sit 1.5 games behind the fourth seed.
SFA is currently 7.5 games from the top-seeded Sam Houston. The Lumberjacks will rely on Bogues and Harris but will also rely on the bench play to compete against the depth of UCA and LU.
