SFA basketball teams look to remain on top of Southland Conference standings

Lumberjacks

The Lumberjacks hold a nine-game winning streak and look to continue their No. 1 seed dominance this week when they take on the University of Central Arkansas Bears at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in William R. Johnson Coliseum and the University of the Incarnate Word Cardinals at 4:15 p.m. Saturday in San Antonio.

SFA holds a 22-3 overall record, a 13-1 conference record and a .929 winning percentage. The Lumberjacks come off an 81-74 win against the University of New Orleans and a 75-67 win against Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. The win against the Islanders was a redemption game for the Lumberjacks as the Islanders were the only SLC team to have beaten the Jacks.

The Lumberjacks were up by one at half time, but were able to outscore the Islanders 43-36 in the second half. The Lumberjacks’ offense proved to be the key to winning, as four players finished in double figures.

UCA holds a 9-17 overall record, an 8-7 conference record, a .533 winning percentage and is coming off an 82-67 loss to Sam Houston State University. SHSU’s senior center Kai Mitchell dropped 30 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the match. The Bears’ leading scorer for the game was sophomore center Hayden Koval who scored 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

UCA averages 75.1 points per game with a .416 field-goal percentage and a .319 3-point percentage. The team averages 38.6 rebounds, 13.8 assists, 5.3 steals and 5.2 blocks per game. Junior guard Rylan Bergersen leads the team in assists and scoring averaging 2.9 assists and 14.8 points per game with a .402 field-goal percentage and a .240 3-point percentage. Junior guard Deandre Jones averages a team high of 5.4 assists per game 1.3 steals per game.

On defense, the Bears’ sophomore guard Haden Koval leads the team with 7.6 rebounds and 3.1 blocks per game.

UIW holds an 8-17 overall record, a 5-9 conference record and a .308 winning percentage. The Cardinals average 65.9 points per game, a .411 field-goal percentage and a .288 3-point percentage. They average 33.3 rebounds, 12.1 assists, 7.3 steals and 2.4 blocks per game.

Freshman guard Keaston Willis leads the team in scoring with 13 points per game off a .342 field-goal percentage. Freshman guard Drew Lutz also contributes with 11.1 points per game and has 81 assists this season, averaging 3.2 assists per game. On defense, freshman guard Vincent Misziewicz leads the team with 7.4 rebounds per game and 22 blocks on the season.

Wednesday’s game will be broadcast on ESPN+ and Saturday’s will be on ESPN3.

Ladyjacks

The Ladyjacks basketball team will look to continue its three-game winning streak and defend their No. 1 seed in the Southland Conference this week when they take on the University of Central Arkansas Sugar Bears at 7 p.m. on Wednesday in Conway, Arkansas, and the University of the Incarnate Word Cardinals at 2 p.m. on Saturday in San Antonio.

SFA holds a 19-4 overall record, a 12-1 conference record and a .857 winning percentage. The Ladyjacks come off a 72-49 win against Texas A&M University - Corpus Christi and a 59-47 win against the University of New

Orleans Privateers last week. UCA holds an 11-13 overall record, a 7-8 conference record, a .467 winning percentage and is coming off a 58-73 loss against Sam Houston State University. The Sugar Bears led against the Bearkats during the second half of the game. However, they were outscored 25-6 in the fourth quarter to allow the Bearkats to win the game. The Sugar Bears ended the game with a .417 field-goal percentage and a .250 3-point percentage.

UCA averages 56.5 points per game with a .403 field-goal percentage and a .211 3-point percentage. The team averages 39.4 rebounds, 9.7 assists, 6.3 steals and 2.8 blocks per game. Senior guard Taylor Sells leads the team in points with 9.5 points per game and 2.9 assists a game.

On defense, the Sugar Bears’ junior center Hannah Langhi leads the team with 6.2 rebounds a game and has blocked a team high 25 shots.

UIW is sitting firmly in the middle of the conference with a 11-12 overall record, a 7-7 conference record, a .500-win percentage and is coming off a 57-61 loss to the UNO Privateers. The Cardinals average 57.7 points per game and have a .368 field-goal percentage and a .311 3-point percentage. The team averages 34.0 rebounds, 10.5 assists, 8.4 steals and 2.7 blocks a game.

Senior guard Imani Robinson leads the team’s offense with 13.7 points per game with a .411 field-goal percentage and an .271 3-point percentage. Junior guard Kara Speer also contributes with a .391 3-point percentage and 7.6 points per game.

On defense, Speer pulls down an average of 7.1 rebounds a game while Robinson leads the team with 37 steals.

The Lumberjacks match against the Sugar Bears will be broadcast on ESPN+ and the game against the Cardinals will be on ESPN 3.
