The SFA volleyball team defeated the Texas A&M University- Corpus Christi Islanders 3-1 in the semifinals of the Southland Conference tournament in Conway, Arkansas. They will play the Sam Houston State University Bearkats at 3:05 p.m. tomorrow, seeking a title win and a berth to the NCAA tournament.
It was a difficult match for the Ladyjacks after the Islanders took them to a fourth set. Last year, the Islanders had the lone set win against SFA in the entire tournament. It was in set three where SFA needed one last set win to advance and the Islanders were able to take advantage of SFA’s errors.
SFA took the first set 23-25 with a .268 hitting percentage, allowing the Islanders a .178 hitting percentage. The Ladyjackswent on a 5-0 run in the first set to take the lead 15-12 before the Islanders responded with a 5-0 run to regain the lead 19-17. Kills from senior outside hitter Corin Evans, senior middle blocker Danae Daron and senior outside hitter Xariah Williams allowed SFA a close win.
In the second set, the Ladyjacks went on an early 4-0 run to maintain the lead for the set and ending with another 4-0 run. SFA had 19 kills in the second set with a .474 hitting percentage. TAMUCC had 14 kills and a .244 hitting percentage.
In the third set, the Ladyjacks started off with the lead 12-9 before the Islanders went on a 7-0 run to take the lead 16-0. The run came from five kills from the Islanders and a service error and an attack error by the Ladyjacks. SFA had a .269 hitting percentage in the third set with nine kills while the Islanders had a .290 hitting percentage and 16 kills. SFA had four blocks on defense.
In the fourth set, the Ladyjacks finished things off with a .389 hitting percentage and 15 kills and allowing the Islanders a .167 hitting percentage. SFA was dominant on defense with six kills and two service aces.
Islanders’ senior setter Madison Green had a triple-double early in the game with 18 kills, 29 assists and 16 digs. On SFA’s offense, Evans had 19 kills, Williams had 11 with a .611 hitting percentage and Daron had 10 kills. SFA had a total of 13 blocks and 63 digs with TAMUCC had two blocks and 73 digs.
