Lumberjacks eye series against Nicholls

 Josh Campbell swings at a pitch. The Lumberjacks will square off in a weekend series against Nicholls this weekend. Following that series, the Lumberjacks will face New Orleans in the regular season final series before the Southland Conference Tournament.

Entering the last month of the regular season, the Lumberjacks baseball team will play a weekend three- game series against Nicholls State University Friday through Sunday.

The Lumberjacks hold an overall record of 21-27, a 13-11 conference record and a .438 winning percentage. SFA is tied with Northwestern State for No. 5 in the Southland Conference.

The team has come off a weekend series loss 3-0 against McNeese. The Jacks lost 0-2 on Friday, 1-6 on Saturday and 5-1 on Sunday. The Jacks will start their series against Nicholls at 6 p.m. on Friday in Thibodaux, Louisiana. They will then play at 6 p.m. on Saturday and their last game at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

Ranked No.9 in the SLC, the NSU Colonels have a 24-23 overall record, an 11-12 conference record and a .511 winning percentage. They are one game behind McNeese and are looking to have a spot in the conference tournament from wins in these last two series against SFA and Abilene Christian University.

NSU had a difficult weekend against Houston Baptist University, losing 7-11 after 12 innings on Saturday and winning 4-3 on Sunday

after 15 innings. The Colonels’ Adam Tarver has had four home runs this season with a .260 BA and 20 RBI. Austin France has a .263 BA with two home runs and 26 RBI.

Having pitched 84.1 innings this season, Jacob Bedevian has a 3.31 ERA, a 1.12 WHIP and 52 strike outs. On defense, Tarver has a .995 fielding percentage with 360 putouts and 19 assists.

Despite SFA’s loss on Sunday against McNeese, Pitcher Trayson Kubo had eight strikeouts, totaling 53 SO for the season. Kubo’s highest number of SO was 11 Army in March. He has pitched 48.1 innings this season with a 5.77 ERA and a 1.70WHIP.

Alex Palmer became the leading pitcher for strikeouts for the program adding nine of them on Friday for a total of 85 SO. Palmer has pitched the most innings for the Jacks this season. With 81 innings, he has a 2.78 ERA and a 1.04 WHIP.

The Lumberjacks will play their final weekend series against the University of New Orleans on May 16 -18 in Nacogdoches before playing in the SLC tournament starting on May 22.
