The Ladyjacks softball team will look to break a four- way tie for second place with a weekend series against Lamar.
The Ladyjacks trail Northwestern State by only one game for first place, and they share an 8-4 record with Sam Houston, Lamar, McNeese and Nicholls for second place.
The Ladyjacks are coming off a series win against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in which they took 2 of 3 games and outscored the Islanders 10-4.
In the final game of the series, in particular, the Ladyjacks won 6-2 behind a 3-for-4 performance from Bryana Novegil, including two doubles and two RBIs. Margarita Corona batted 2-for-4 in the game, and Lindsay Gregory added one hit and two RBIs.
Kassidy Wilbur threw a complete game for the Ladyjacks in the decisive game of the series, in which she allowed two runs on only three hits and struck out 10 batters. Wilbur earned her 12th win of the season and left the game with a 1.72 ERA.
Statistically, SFA is led by Novegil, who has a batting average of .322 and 37 hits and has driven in 13 batters. Following closely is Corona who has a .320 batting average and leads the team in home runs with seven and RBIs with 22. Brittany Crawford has contributed four home runs and 20 RBI’s along with a .283 batting average.
As mentioned before, Wilbur leads the team with a 1.72 ERA which ranks top 10 in the Southland Conference pitching ranks. Wilbur also leads the Jacks in strikeout with 170. Ashley Kriesel follows with a 2.92 ERA and a 7-4 record.
Next, the Jacks will turn their attention to Lamar, which boasts two players who have a batting average above .300. Savana Guidry leads the way in the batter’s box with a .324 batting average and seven RBI’. Jade Lewis follows closely with a .313 batting average and leads the team in both hits with 30 and RBIs with 14. Shannon Klaus has found her groove on the base path with a team-leading 20 runs.
Along with decent batters, the Jacks also might go against the Cardinals’ ace Erin Kyle. Kyle holds a 2.06 ERA with a 6-4 record. Following Kyle is Aaliyah Ruiz with a 2.41 ERA and a team-leading 40 strikeouts.
Throughout the conference slate of games, Lamar has series wins against Abilene Christian, TAMUCC and the most recent series win against Central Arkansas. Their only conference series loss came against Sam Houston.
SFA will play a doubleheader for the first two games of the series against Lamar. This season, SFA is 5-of-8 on conference doubleheader games and has swept a doubleheader only once against Houston Baptist on March 22.
SFA will kick off the series with a doubleheader with the first game at 1 p.m. Friday followed by the second at 3 p.m. The final game of the series will be at noon on Saturday. All games will be played at the SFA Softball Fields.
Following the series, SFA will take on Texas Southern on April 10, followed by a three-game conference series against Southland Conference foe Incarnate Word on April 12-13.
