On Feb. 24 the Lumberjacks faced off their rival, Sam Houston State and came out with a close win with a final score of 69-67.
The Lumberjack basketball team now holds a 19-8 overall record with a 11-4 record in the Western Athletic Conference. This was also the teams seventh straight win in a row. Sam Houston now holds a 17-12 overall record with a 12-4 record in the WAC.
The Lumberjacks started off strong in the first quarter blowing past Sam Houston and ending the first quarter with a 41-28 lead. But Sam Houston came back with vengeance in the second quarter giving the Lumberjacks a run for their money.
Some highlights from the game included the two crucial free throws made by Freshman Guard Jaylin Jackson Posey with one point seven seconds left of the game. Player of the game, Senior Forward Gavin Kensmil, scored 18 points including two free throws. Freshman Guard Latrell Jossell earned 15 points including four three pointers and three free throws.
After the two free throws scored by Posey the time ran out and SFA won the game. The coliseum erupted in cheer and everyone got up on their feet after beating their biggest rival, Sam Houston. This was a huge win for the team after their previous game against Sam Houston being a tough 41-49 loss.
The Lumberjacks next game will be their final home game on Feb. 26 at 4 p.m. against Abilene Chrisitan University where the Lumberjacks hope to continue their winning streak. Abilene Christian is currently 18-8 overall and 9-6 in the WAC.
This game will also be senior night highlighting Senior Guard David Kachelries, Senior Forward Gavin Kensmil, Senior Guard Roti Ware and Senior Guard Diego Willis. The first 300 people to show up to the game will also be given a free SFA Black Out T-shirt. The game will also be streamed via ESPN+ for those who cannot make it to the game.
