The SFA women’s basketball team is in a three-way tie with Texas A&M University- Corpus Christi and Sam Houston State University for first place in the Southland Conference. The Ladyjacks will play Nicholls State University at 6 p.m. on Wednesday in Thibodaux, Louisiana, and will play the University of New Orleans at 2 p.m. on Saturday in William R. Johnson Coliseum.
The Ladyjacks come off a 69-59 win against the Abilene Christian University Wildcats on Wednesday and a 63-55 loss against the Sam Houston State University Bearkats on Saturday. SFA is No.11 in the NCAA in scoring defense, allowing 54 points per game.
In the rivalry match up against the Bearkats on Saturday, the Ladyjacks led in the first quarter 13-8 before Sam Houston took the lead in the second quarter, outscoring SFA 24-13. The Bearkats maintained the lead for the remainder of the game.
The Nicholls State Colonels are ranked 10th in the SLC with a 6-14 overall record, a 3-8 conference record and a .300 winning percentage. They come off a 79-63 win against McNeese State University. The Colonels average 64.3 points per game while allowing opponents to average 70.5 points per game.
The Colonels have a team field-goal percentage of .397 and a 3-point percentage of .243. The team averages 33.5 rebounds, 12.7 assists, 11.2 steals and 2.6 blocks per game. The Colonels’ offense is led by senior forward Chrystal Ezechukwu who averages 14 points per game. She has a .429 field-goal percentage and a .500 3-point percentage.
Ezechukwu also leads Nicholl’s defense with a total of 115 rebounds, averaging 6.8 rebounds per game. Senior guard Tykeria Williams is also a contributor to both the team’s offense and defense, leading the team in assists and steals, with 86 and 46 respectively.
Saturday’s game against the University of New Orleans Privateers will be a doubleheader in Nacogdoches. The Privateers are fifth in the conference and one loss behind ACU. They come off a 73-57 loss against Southeastern Louisiana University and will play against Houston Baptist University on Wednesday.
UNO has an 11-9 overall record, a 7-4 conference record and a .550 winning percentage. The Privateers average 63.7 points per game while allowing opponents to average 64.3 points per game. They have a .380 field-goal percentage and a .279 3-point percentage. They also average 38.8 rebounds, 10.8 assists, 10.4 steals and 3.9 blocks per game.
Senior guard Rehema Franklin leads UNO’s offense by averaging 13 points per game with a .385 field-goal percentage and a .309 3-point percentage. Junior guard Dionjhae Thomas contributes to the offense leading in assists with 41, averaging 2.1 assists per game. On defense, Franklin averages 2.1 steals per game.
Senior forward Asia Woods averages 7.4 rebounds per game with a total of 148 rebounds, and senior forward Whitley Larry leads the team with 1.9 blocks per game and a total of 37 blocks.
