ARLINGTON, Texas - The SFA women’s tennis team rallied to defeat Texas-Arlington, 4-3, Friday night at the UTA Tennis Center in Arlington. The Ladyjacks move to 3-6 (.333) on the season.
“I’m very proud of how are team never quit fighting,” said head coach Stephanie Wooten. “We surrendered an early lead to go down 3-2, but we never gave up. This is a quality victory as our team moves forward.”
Sophomore Julia Lorca scored the deciding point in dramatic fashion. After dropping the first set, Lorca battled back to force a third. As if following the same script, Lorca fell behind by two points early in the third but rallied for the singles, and overall match victory.
The Ladyjacks took a 2-0 lead after winning at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles, and sophomore Malena Gordo’s 6-1, 6-1, victory over UTA’s Brooke Dennis at No. 1 singles. But the momentum didn’t last long as the Mavericks rallied to take the next three singles matches, and a one-point lead.
Junior Laura Service picked up a key win at No. 6 singles to stop the bleeding, eventually setting the stage for Lorca’s heroics.
SFA returns to action Saturday when they take on UC Santa Barbara. The match against the Gauchos is slated to begin at 10 a.m.
