Student Government Association Senate passes new bill for drink testers

The Student Government Association Senate passed a Test my Drink Cards bill on Jan. 25 at the SGA Senate meeting.

The bill was signed into effect by Student Body President Madison Gartman and Speaker of the Senate Remigio Casanova.

The Test my Drink bill was unanimously voted for by each member, with an amendment being added. The amendment states this bill should only be used in a lawful manner. 

The Test-My-Drink cards test for GHB and Ketamine concentrations. According to the Test My Drink website, these odorless and tasteless drugs can be added to an unsuspecting victim’s drink and lead to drug-facilitated sexual assault. 

“SFA students deserve access to a safe drinking environment, however, SGA only supports the consumption of alcohol that complies with local, state and federal laws,” Communications Director Nathan Lyons said. 

SGA has ordered 25 Test my Drink Card kits, with each kit including 10 cards for a total of 250 cards. Each card also has two sides, totaling to 500 tests to disperse to the student body. When the cards arrive, they will be found in the SGA office on the first floor of the Baker Pattillo Student Center, Suite 1.203. 

Along with this bill, SGA also presented a bill that would have also allowed the organization to give out free blood alcohol saliva strips. However, the bill was tabled due to concerns that it would “encourage students to push their limits rather than think twice,” a member of the SGA senate said during the meeting.  

The SGA plans to speak with the University Police Department and Driving Jacks to find possible amendments to the saliva strips bill before presenting it again on Feb. 8.

El Senado de la Asociación de Gobierno Estudiantil aprobó el proyecto de ley Test my Drink Cards el 25 de enero de la reunión del Senado de la SGA.

El proyecto de ley fue firmado y puesto en vigencia por la presidenta del cuerpo estudiantil, Madison Gartman, y el presidente del Senado, Remigio Casanova.

El proyecto de ley Test my Drink fue votado por unanimidad por cada miembro, y se agregó una enmienda. La enmienda establece que este proyecto de ley sólo debe usarse de manera legal.

Las tarjetas Test-My-Drink prueban las concentraciones de GHB y Ketamina. Según el sitio web Test My Drink, estas drogas inodoras e insípidas pueden agregarse a la bebida de una víctima desprevenida y provocar una agresión sexual facilitada por las drogas.

“Los estudiantes de SFA merecen acceso a un ambiente seguro para beber, sin embargo, SGA solo apoya el consumo de alcohol que cumple con las leyes locales, estatales, y federales”, dijo Nathan Lyons, director de comunicaciones.

SGA ha pedido 25 kits de Test my Drink Card, y cada kit incluye 10 tarjetas para un total de 250 tarjetas. Cada tarjeta también tiene dos lados, con un total de 500 pruebas para distribuir entre el alumnado. Cuando lleguen las tarjetas, se encontrarán en la oficina de SGA en el primer piso del Centro de Estudiantes Baker Pattillo, Suite 1.203.

Junto con este proyecto de ley, SGA también presentó un proyecto de ley que también habría permitido a la organización entregar tiras de saliva con alcohol en sangre gratis. Sin embargo, el proyecto de ley se presentó debido a la preocupación de que “alentaría a los estudiantes a superar sus límites en lugar de pensarlo dos veces,” dijo un miembro del senado de la SGA durante la reunión.

El SGA planea hablar con el Departamento de Policía de la Universidad y Driving Jacks para encontrar posibles enmiendas al proyecto de ley de tiras de saliva antes de presentarlo nuevamente el 8 de febrero.
