The Board of Regents unanimously voted to begin the process of appointing Dr. Steve Westbrook the 10th president of SFA at their Board meeting on Jan. 29.
This change in Westbrook’s title comes after serving as the University’s interim president when former president Scott Gordon stepped down. He has served the University for over 40 years in roles including interim president, vice president of university affairs, executive director of student affairs and director of student activities.
“While it will still take 21 days and another board meeting to be official, the campus community wanted to celebrate and thank him now,” University Marketing Communications said in an email to the SFA community that afternoon.
Westbrook said he is honored by the Board of Regents’ action.
“For more than 45 years SFA has been my home, and the people of SFA have been my extended family, so being named as the 10th president is very meaningful to me,” Westbrook said.
During her time in his graduate finance class and as student regent, Student Regent Paige Vadnais has come to see Westbrook as a true mentor and leader. She said she believes he deserves this new title.
“Examples of his exemplary leadership can be seen in his past actions where in times of hardships the University has faced Dr. Westbrook has been there, walking right along with us and guiding the University to its next destination,” Vadnais said. “It is by this, his repeated display of selflessness that I have developed an even greater sense of respect, admiration and confidence in his leadership for this University.”
The search for the University’s 11th president is still underway, and a search committee will be appointed by the University of Texas System Board of Regents chairman. Westbrook is set to retire at the end of May.
“I will continue to do my best to represent our University well, both on campus and across the state, as we honor our past and look to our bright future as a new member of The University of Texas System,” Westbrook said.
