Lumberjacks fall to Bearkats in final Battle of The Piney Woods

The Lumberjacks faced the Sam Houston State University Bearkats one last time at the final Battle of The Piney Woods and lost 16-17 on Oct. 1. 

The Lumberjacks had a strong start to the game, scoring three points in field goals in the first quarter. The Bearkats struggled and failed to score during the first quarter. However, the Bearkats began to fight back when their quarterback Keegan Shoemaker, a junior from Prosper, intercepted a pass from Lumberjack safety Ja’Terious Evans, a senior from Center. 

In the second quarter, fans became tense as both teams stepped up their game. The Lumberjacks scored the first touchdown when wide receiver Moe Wedman, a sophomore from Spartansburg, South Carolina, caught a pass from quarterback Trae Self, a senior from North Richland Hills. The Bearkats followed soon after with their own touchdown and successful kick, making the score 13-7 at halftime. 

After halftime the Lumberjacks and Bearkats began to fight more ferociously. Both teams scored three points each in the third quarter, bringing the score to 16-10 by the time the fourth quarter started. In the fourth quarter, it seemed as if the Lumberjacks were going to win until they were given a penalty. The Bearkats were then able to score a touchdown and kick in the last few moments of the game, bringing their total points up to 17 and winning the final Battle of The Piney Woods. 

The Lumberjacks will face off against the Abilene Christian University Wildcats on Oct. 8 at Homer Bryce Stadium.

Los Leñadores se enfrentarán a los Gatos Monteses de la Universidad de Abilene Christian el 8 de octubre en el Estadio Homer Bryce.
